Bridge arch developed on scaffolding almost 70 meters high

The 385-meter-long Massetal Bridge was built in the course of constructing the new Ebensfeld-Erfurt railway line. The reinforced concrete base of the structure with a 165-meter span has a box cross-section, which the Bautzen-based company Hentschke Bau GmbH formed and concreted with the help of ground-supported scaffolding, starting from the two abutments, section by section in symmetrical cycles, base slab first. thyssenkrupp Infrastructure developed the scaffolding for the project, prepared veritable calculations, provided the required material and performed the assembly.

Sophisticated concept

The reinforced concrete base is fixed to the abutment from below on both sides of the bridge and acts like a cantilever arm. It is downwardly supported by the scaffolding and laterally the box cross-section is so rigid that it stabilizes both itself and the scaffolding. Thanks to this ingenious structural interaction, even the almost 70-meter-high central tower (9 x 7 meters plan view) is capable of supporting any stabilization and/or concrete loads that occur.

An approx. 50-meter-high scaffolding tower 7 x 7 meters in size stands on either side, some 26 meters from the central tower. An approx. 25-meter-high tower follows on both sides with a base of 6 x 7 meters, almost 17 meters further away. The scaffolding ends at the two abutments with approximately 4-meter-high support systems consisting of the innovative RöRo S 150 heavy-duty supports.

The five scaffolding towers consist of the S 250 heavy-duty support system, the bases are 12-meter-long HEB 360 steel sections. Depending on the buckling length, each bar is calculated for approximately 1,800 kN, which means each supporting tower can handle a load of 7,200 kN. At the upper end, the scaffolding construction consists of HEB 800 longitudinal beams and H33 lattice beam scaffolding trusses connected to the scaffolding towers.

The reinforced concrete arch of the Massetal Bridge has a box cross-section. The tremendous height presented a particularly difficult technical challenge.

Due to the tremendous height of the scaffolding, the assembly of the approximately 1,000 tons of material required a highly detailed and well-planned approach. Supply was ensured by external elevators on the scaffolding towers. 12-meter-high work scaffolding within the scaffolding towers ensured maximum safety and provided the assemblers with a safe structure to erect the 12-meter-high bars and connect them via tension bars. As soon as a tower level was nished, the work scaffolding was moved to the following level.

After the arch had been concreted, the load was taken o the scaffolding and the track was made using an incremental launch procedure. When dismantling, the complete sca olding was pulled out sideways using a synchronized hydraulic system under the finished superstructure, enabling the scaffolding to be safely and quickly dismantled “from above” by crane.
